Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi, PDP) has been arraigned before an FCT High Court in Apo, Abuja on a six-count charge bordering on attempted suicide.
Dino Melaye was also charged with the offences of attempt to escape from lawful custody and damage of police property.
Prosecuting counsel, Alex Izinyon (SAN) told the court that Dino Melaye on April 2 while being conveyed in a police vehicle to Lokoja, forced his way out of the vehicle from where he orchestrated his escape.
Izinyon said after forcing his way out of the vehicle, Melaye sat on the ground, holding a substance in one hand threatening to drink it to kill himself, so that he could implicate the police officers with him.
He said Dino Melaye broke the side windscreen of the vehicle with his elbow and caused damage to police property.
He said the offences contravened provisions of Sections 148, 153, 173, 231, 326 and 327 of the Penal Code.
Melaye however pleaded not guilty to the charge, when read to him. Upon this, his counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) asked the court to allow the bail granted to the defendant at the Magistrate Court Wuse on the same charges to continue.
But, the prosecution opposed the application, adding that bail was at the discretion of the court.
The trial judge, Justice Silvanus Oriji granted him bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.
He also ordered that the sureties must be directors in the civil service, residing in the FCT, and must depose to affidavits of means.
Justice Oriji further said the case would be assigned to another judge by the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello after the judges’ annual vacation.
