Tithes: Reno Omokri speaks on the issue of tithes

Reno Omokri has waded into the tithe controversy explaining what will and will not happen if one does not pay tithes

There has been a raging controversy about the issue of tithe payment among Christians and many influential Nigerians have taken part in the discourse.

Over time, many pastors around Nigeria have warned their followers that they would suffer certain grave consequences if they reused to pay tithes but this has divided any Nigerians. While some feel that the pastors are overly exaggerating the issue or out-rightly lying, others feel they are right and speaking from the Bible.

Now, Reno Omokri, who himself is a pastor, has joined the discussion as he gives his own opinion.

According to him, if a person does not pay tithes, the person will suffer no grave consequence and will not die as some pastors have often claim. He went on to give examples of people who never paid any tithe but went on to make a lot of money.

Omokri made these statements in a series of tweets. See below:

“I have read The Bible from cover to cover in multiple translations-tithes are an AGRICULTURAL tax placed on the Hebrews by God to cater for Levites who were not given any land in the promised land by Moses because God wanted them to focus on him.Tithes are for Levites not pastors”

“Abraham paid tithe of military plunder to Melchizedek, not earnings. If you don’t pay tithes, things wont be tight for you and you wont die. @JeffBezos became the world’s richest man through ideas not tithes. As a matter of fact, tithes have no place in Christianity!”

“If riches are linked to paying tithes, how come Japan, with less than 1% Christian population is 10 times richer than Nigeria with a Christian population of almost 50%? This is even as Japan’s natural resources are 5 times less than Nigeria’s? Ideas bring more riches than tithes!”

“Sadly, tithes have become the number one reason for proliferation of all manner of churches by get rich quick pastors. But biblically, you pay tithes to Levites not pastors. You can become a pastor, but you can’t become a Levite. You are born a Levite (Num 3:9) #FactsAboutTithes”
